Who can be admitted?

We are looking for students with a very good Master's or an excellent Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field.

What is the working language?

English is the main language used in courses, exams, and administrative matters. While fluency in German is not required for studies or research work, basic knowledge can help you navigate everyday situations better. CSGS provides opportunities to learn German or improve your skills. Check also the offer at the International School for Graduate Studies for regular German courses.

Can I do an internship?

If you want to do an internship or a research stay of limited duration, you should contact directly the person or research group that you want with.

I am a graduate student at another university/institution, but I want to do some research at the University of Kaiserslautern-Landau.

The faculty offers PhD students from other universities and research institutions the possibility to carry out parts of their research work in Kaiserslautern. We recommend placements of one to two years.
PhD students who are interested in such a research placement at the University of Kaiserslautern-Landau should apply directly to a research group or institute. You should submit a comprehensive letter of motivation together with a description of the complete PhD project at your actual place of study. This must include information about your current PhD status and what you expect to gain from a research placement in Kaiserslautern.
As this is just a research placement without examination requirements, a formal qualification exam is not necessary.

You must apply directly using the online application form.

When can I apply?

Applications can be submitted any time and are usually processed every 2-3 months.

What documents do I have to provide when applying?

You have to fill in the application form and upload the following documents:

• Curriculum Vitae (C.V.)
• Copies or certified translations of Bachelor/Master degrees, including transcript of records (in German or English)
• A motivation letter
• Proof of your English or German proficiency (e.g. TOEFL, IELTS, TestDaF)
• Two letters of recommendation from faculty staff of a university or research institute (if you have not graduated at the University of Kaiserslautern-Landau and if you are applying for a scholarship)

What happens after I submitted my application?

The PhD board will review your application documents and contact you via email about the result.

What is the difference between a traditional M.Sc. and an M.Sc. as part of the graduate studies phase?

The qualification studies course with 120 ECTS credits is different from a standard master's course in that it focuses more on the future research topic. Further, you will already have a personal mentor that helps you in developing your individual research profile.

Financial matters

What fees to I have to pay?

Every registered student has to pay 259,54 EUR social contribution per term (includes student ticket with free use of public transport services in and around Kaiserslautern).

Graduation studies phase

What courses do I have to take?

The PhD board will review your application and determine your personal workload. Together with your personal advisor, they will define a list of courses that will complement your background.
The module handbook lists all courses that taught currently at the CS department.

How many courses do I have to take?

• Applicants with a master or equivalent degree in computer science from a German university have already proved their qualification in the subject computer science. They are directly admitted to the doctoral studies phase.
• Applicants with a master or equivalent degree in computer science from a foreign university may be required to attend further qualification studies courses if their degree is not considered equivalent to a German degree.
• Applicants with a master or degree from a German university in a different subject must provide proof of or achieve at least 24 extra ECTS credits in computer science at master level.
• Applicants with a B.Sc. in computer science from a German university and applicants with a B.Sc. in computer science from a University of Applied Sciences who are among the best 5% in their year can be accepted as PhD students after completing qualification studies with 90 ECTS credits.
